Cookin' and Dancin'

In my last video update, I talked about how Sam’s initiation is starting to kick in and that he wants to be more involved in what I’m doing. Currently, it’s small steps but we’re heading in the right direction!

I took this video on 11/18/20 at 5:55pm. It was such a wonderful night! By the time I’m cooking dinner, Sam had had a full day of therapy and normally wants to relax in the living room but this time he chose to hang with me in the kitchen. Originally, he was sitting down but then, ON HIS OWN, he stood up and came behind me while I was prepping. I asked if he wanted to help me with a recipe I was winging and he did. Together, we decided on the right oven temperature and that it might actually turn out edible 😹

When this song came on, ON HIS OWN, he stretched out his arms to me. Thinking he wanted a hug, and I’m always up for Sam hugs, I moved in close. Imagine my surprise when he starting swaying, dancing to the music just like we used to do when cooking together!! As much as I didn’t want to interrupt, I HAD to take a quick video. Not the best angle or in general good camera work but my mind was elsewhere, remembering all the times we had danced together and all the memories we have to this song.

Then, if all of this wasn’t enough, ON HIS OWN, he kissed me 😻 I don’t think you’ll be able to pick it up in the video but he ever so slightly moved his head towards me so I lifted my face up to his. Kissing me is the one thing he has initiated consistently during this whole journey so I’m very attuned to his movement. I mean, hugs are fabulous but kisses are even better, right?!?

The end, as I’m correcting how he’s scratching his chin, shows that therapy is never really over. We are constantly working, pushing, reminding his body how to move correctly. Even when I try to enjoy the moment, I automatically move in to adjust him. It might seem like I’m overbearing or a workaholic (both of which are true) but, with Sam’s recovery, repetition is key. Lucky for me, he rarely gets frustrated or aggravated. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Sam truly makes this as easy as he possibly can 💛

From our second year volunteering together at Blue Mountain Pizza for the community Thanksgiving dinner 😻 I remember being SO thrilled that Matt put me in charge of the pie table. I also remember Sam and I joking that he was checking out my butt vs the pies in this picture...front page news indeed 😹

We started weaning down Sam’s seizure meds on Friday. 💃🏻 It’s a very slow, gradual process but everything is normal so far. With all the meds we’ve taken him off of, I have a good idea what to expect. Right now, we’ve got the extra tiredness and things being just a bit harder. We hold at this level (down by ~8%) for 2 weeks and then do another drop. This is one of what I call the ‘heavy hitters,’ high doses, very intense medication and he’s been on it since his injury in July of 2019. It’s a very exciting but also very anxious time 😬

BUT, right now, everything is great! We got some AMAZING new yesterday that I’ll fill everyone in on soon. I’m making some real progress on a personal project I’ve been working on. Life is good, y’all! Loves 💛

Getting Back At It!

Right when I was getting into my (photo)blogging routine, Sam and I had an super duper medical emergency. I’m not going into details since I feel like everyone who follows this blog knows everything that’s happened.

I’ve wondered what I should do over here now…continue the photo blog style, return to a traditional blog feel, discontinue it all together since I have so many other platforms to keep updated??? I knew that I didn’t want to take it down but does it make sense to continue after such a dramatic life change? I’m still deciding but, while I do, I figured I should make use of the platform. I think I’ll use this as a central point for updates…maybe. So indecisive, right?

Anyway, I’m working on letting things happen organically. It seems to be how we’re getting our best results and outcomes so I’m going to lean into it! If you follow our GoFundMe or the Facebook group (Save Sam Strider), you’ve already seen this video but I thought it would be a good starting point for me to get back at this whole blogging thing. Plus, I think there’s maybe a few of you that aren’t on social media so haven’t seen it yet or any of the other video or written updates I post. Since this might be your first time viewing one of my video updates, I’ll prepare you. They are LONG! So you’ve been warned!!

I don’t think you’ll see the video description I posted on YouTube if you play it directly from the blog. So here’s that:

Our blessings have been piling up over here and I had to do a video update!! I mentioned it at the end but please use the code GIVETHANKS to get 20% off our whole site, PaintForkFarm.com, until 11:59pm on 12/1/2020. Thank you all so much for staying with us on this miraculous, amazing journey!!! Loves 💛💛💛 Side note: I kept saying 2020 was going to be a good year and I obviously meant 2021 😹)

Storm rolled in a stayed a couple days. While it was awesome to enjoy the rain and it brought much cooler temperatures, it caused a lot of damage. Le sigh, it was a nice rain though.
Kit purchased on Amazon.com
From cutting to soldering, here is Sam working on his first ever stained glass piece! A little lead came around the outside, patina and a nice scrub and he's all done!!

2019: Week 29

Making burgers on the Cobb!
Touring Carolina Flowers during the Flowers and Clay event and a quick look at one of my favorite of Josh's pieces. HUGE thanks and congratulations to Emily and Josh Copus on their first Flowers and Clay event. It was a smashing success and we had such a good time!
Back again and still loving those apples!

2019: Week 28

July 8 - July 14

We had a lot of driving around this week. Couple that with trying to stay on top of weeding over on the farm and it makes for a light week for picture taking.

2019: Week 27

July 1 - July 7

So our friend, Jon, likes to make up his own jokes. This one is about a musician that plays at Blue Mountain Pizza, named Ben Phan. Possibly my favorite Jon Joke to date!
I really liked the tone of these chimes, very relaxing. Reminded me of some that my parents' neighbor has up around his property.
Our farm update is a week late again and I've already forgotten the order of the Dahlias we planted. Oops! Luckily, the varieties are quite different so I'll be able to identify once they start blooming.

2019: Week 26

June 24 - June 30

A deer eating fallen apples first thing in the morning. This one, or at least I think this is the one, likes to sleep with our chickens and visit me while I weed. It's becoming a 'deer' friend ;)

2019: Week 25

June 17 - June 23

2019: Week 24

June 10 - June 16

A very special guest on The Sam Squared Show, Derp joins us for an episode of Chicken Chat.
A neighbor's Great Dane attacked our chickens! Luckily, everyone made it out alive. Scrimshaw defended his ladies and was snatched up. He's bruised but otherwise fine. I'm breathless from running around and freaking out!
This beauty was sleeping with our side flock. I interrupted her sleep so off she goes!

April 22 - April 28

Another week with lots of pictures because we CELEBRATED MY BIRTHDAY!!! Woot, woot!! Oh and the driveway was fixed!

The fanciest shower I have ever been in!! At Shoji Spa in Asheville, NC. I did make sure that there was no one else in the bathroom (and shower of course) before taking the video. It was amazing! Reminded me of the prefects bathroom in Harry Potter!!

2019: Week 16

April 15 - April 21

Still playing catch up over here but lots of exciting things in the work! We did a ton of work on the chicken areas, had a beautiful shed delivered to the farm and lost our driveway in a flood. We took a ton of pictures and videos so, be warned, this is a LONG post!!

Our 10x20 shed arrives! I can't believe how smooth the driver was. I was so nervous!!
Like butter, y'all!
Lots of chicken renovations with a bit of farm work and a new shed delivered!!
Came home from work to this! A honest and uncut reaction: laughter and cursing!!
After our shared driveway was washed away by some flooding, we used the trailer to help our neighbors get their stuff to their house.

2019: Week 15

Man, when we get behind, we GET behind!! Very late on these next couple of posts. I don’t want to just dump them on here so I’ll post another every few days until I’m caught up. Lots of exciting things coming up though so stay tuned!!
